I’ve always been a hustler. Ambitious. Some guys take ball four and walk to first base. Me? I run.

Actually, I don’t run anymore.

There was a time when I thought being busy and chaotic was a good thing. ‘Hustling’, I called it.

Until I learned a better way.

It all changed for me when I purchased a cabinet company in 2007. Already in the real estate business as an agent, I also took on the responsibility of running a real estate investment group.

Growing a second business, always pushing forward, busy constantly. All while my kids were in high school and leading busy lives.

One day I realized I went to far. I had a client whose house was on the market but not getting showings. My calendar was so full that I didn’t make time communicate with him. He became upset so we scheduled a meeting. During the meeting I shared with him just how busy I had become, really I was jus giving excuses. My excuses were unacceptable. He decided to do end our business relationship and list with another agent, and rightfully so.

My calendar was full and he wasn’t a priority. I wasn’t paying enough attention to him. But I was busy, this was good, right?

Hustling. Better said–Chaos.

All for money. Or success. However one defines it.

Then the crash of 2008 hit. Things slowed. Dramatically.

The kids moved out of the house and went away to college. My personal life slowed.

I remember praying once for God to restore my busy life. Twisted, right? Who, in their right mind prays this kind of prayer?

My broken leg this past summer forced me to slow down. As I sat in bed day after day, I had time to think. Where is my life going?

Truth is my life was going right back to where it was before the crash, it was beginning to get chaotic.

I vowed that when I’m back on my feet, I’m gonna make some changes. I’m going to get intentional and build margin into my daily routine. You know, white space. Space to breath. Time for life, not just business.

White space, I like to call it, is the space in between appointments. Time in between big events. Time to live life and smell the roses. Walk the dogs.

Last month, I began to get intentional about solving this problem. I decided to restructure my business. Add margin. Do only the important things and leave chaos behind. As I thought about how to proceed, I realized I’m not alone.

Most real estate agents experience the same chaos. Most agents are always on duty. Most agents live a chaotic life. They can never get off of the treadmill. I realized that if I solve this problem for me and my business, I will also solve it for others.

In order to end the chaos I decided to divide the work of a real estate agent into three distinct jobs. From my Payless Cashways days, I dusted off some old initialisms, and created three new positions.

Bastion now has three jobs with which to see our clients through the purchase and sale of a house. CSS, CAS, and CTS. Certified Showing Specialist, Certified Agent Specialist, and Certified Transaction Specialist. Three distinct jobs, performed by three different personalities. Designed for a better client experience and designed to end the chaos.

Our new system addresses chaos and simultaneously allows agents to be more competent at their job. More focused. Not to mention the margin needed to go deeper in their relationships.

Satisfied agents leads to satisfied clients.

Yesterday, I made an offer to bring on a teammate. She is Bastion’s first CSS. Certified Showing Specialist. She is a partner. She will be the key to increasing client satisfaction and bringing new agents into the Company.

Agents looking for margin.

Chaos need not run our lives. If we think carefully about how we approach our calendar, we can change our ways and begin to enjoy the journey.
