Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye originally did their unique take on When the Saints Come Marching In (below) in the movie The Five Pennies. It’s a great clip and led me to think a lot about Armstrong…
However, the training process is not complicated. Start by setting a regular schedule for taking your dog out, teaching him the appropriate commands, and then repeating the commands.
You don’t require special training to make this happen. Just make sure you understand your dog’s behavior and practice patience. The following steps will guide you in teaching your dog to eliminate on command.
1. Pair the respective command to the action of peeing or pooping
Pick a word or command that you will consistently use throughout the training. Some of the common commands are “go-potty,” “empty,” “do your business,” and “time to pee” etc. Basically, you can use any line that you deem fit. Make sure any other person that handles the dog uses the same phrase. You will need a different phrase for urinating and defecating.
2. Study your dog’s behavior
Learn to predict the patterns when your dog is most likely to pee or poop. This might take a while but it will be worth especially when you think of cleaning the stinking mess from your house. After a close study, certain signals will help you recognize that the dog wants to go to the bathroom. These include;
• Sniffing a particular area in your home
• Trying to get out of the house
• Lifting his leg
3. Choose a designated spot
Pick a spot where you want your dog to relieve himself. This could be the backyard, behind a tree, or a dog crate. In places where the weather makes it difficult to take the dog outside, select up a specific area in your house and set it up with a dog litter box, newspapers or pee pee pads.
4. Stay with him until he goes
Mind your own business as you wait for the dog to finish his business. When he lifts his leg or squats, say the magic words “time to pee” or “go potty” in a positive tone to denote a good thing. This way, the dog will connect the phrase to the action of peeing or pooping. After he’s done, lavish him with a treat or praise words that you have been using like “yes” or “good.” If you use a clicker, now would be a good time to click.
5. Repeat the steps
A habit can only be reinforced through repetitive acts. With time, taking your dog to the same spot and using the same commands will help your dog learn the signals to pee or poop.
Important tips to remember
• Only reward the dog after he pees or poops
• Be consistent with training
• Give plenty of praises to your dog. This shows the dog that you’re happy with his actions.
