Five reasons to do a year abroad

Moving to a new country is no easy task, although it can be an unforgettable and priceless experience that will leave you with amazing memories and more independence than ever before.

So, here are FIVE reasons as to why you should do a year abroad if you are able to:

University can be an interesting experience, to say the least. It is a time of change, growth, pressure and fun. When it all gets a bit too much, a new environment can be just what you need for a renewed, refreshed mind. Moving to a new country is not just about the geographical movement but also the cultural and social movement — you find yourself in an unknown space and have to continuously put yourself out there when meeting new people and try new things that may be outside of your comfort zone. The ‘newness’ of it all is challenging yet so rewarding as growth lies beyond the comfort zone.

2. Maximise travel opportunities

You can use weekends and semester break to explore in-country and neighbouring destinations. As the academic year is from September to September and many university courses end in May or June, you can use these periods to fully explore the continent you are situated in. It’s the perfect chance to tick countries off your bucket list, travel with your newfound friends and indulge your wanderlust desires.

3. Learn more about yourself

Being in a new country completely alone can be hard as so often we are used to travelling with friends or family, but going solo can be exciting because of the immense opportunities you have and in which you can learn about your strengths and weaknesses. It is easy to think that you will struggle however often times we are stronger than we think and able to rise to the challenge.

4. Increase your independence

If you can manage to move to another country by yourself, how much more can you do? The possibilities are limitless. I think that completing a year abroad shows you that you are capable of so much, perhaps more than you think, because regardless of whether you enjoy your time or find it difficult — at the end of the year, you can proudly say, “I moved to another country and I learnt so much.”

5. Why not?

Make the most of your freedom, you’re young and have the world at your fingertips. It is the perfect opportunity to make your dreams a reality. Perhaps you have wanted to visit a particular country for a while, now is the time to make it happen. If it’s money you’re worried about — don’t be! Money comes and goes, there are scholarships, grants and student finance available to support you during your year abroad. As a student it’s easy to get overwhelmed by looming coursework deadlines or pressures to secure the perfect paid summer internship; but it’s important to pause, take a breathe, and remember that you’re a student with so much ahead of you and perhaps a year abroad may just be a perfect excuse to recalibrate and refresh your mind.
