7 Most Underrated Cities In the World You Should Visit This Year

Have you already heard of some of the most underrated cities in the world? What about visiting them this year? Many cities enjoy their fame, being capitals, or being considered top cities, visited by a great amount of tourists. Many of them are famous for their beauty, but still many of them are overrated, and at the same time many of them are underrated. There are beautiful cities to visit, some expensive, some not, but both worth considering. There is no need to go to the classic famous cities like Paris, London, New York, Tokio and so on, when there are other interesting, much cheaper alternatives, which unfortunately do not enjoy such fame. What about discovering them or paying them a visit? You will be surprised. Here are some of these cities, which are just waiting for you this year.

Belgrade, Serbia

Following its numerous cycle paths along the river you will arrive to the modern Belgrade Waterfront or to the lake called Ada, where golf, tennis, canoeing and many other activities can be practiced, surrounded by beautiful nature. For a more historic Belgrade, we suggest you to take a stroll in Knez Mihailova, the main pedestrian and shopping street in this city. If you want to visit the biggest orthodox church in the world, then you should go to Hram Svetog Save. However, if you wish to change part of the city, you can go to New Belgrade and admire some very modern buildings and the famous ‘splavovi’, restaurants, clubs and discos situated on the river Danube, where you can enjoy music, food, dance, good laugh all day and all night. Belgrade is famous for its night life and is known as a city which never sleeps. To make things even better, it is a very cheap city for visitors and has some great affordable street food and many accommodation possibilities. Should you want to see the whole city from above, you can go to the Avala Tower, you will be surprised how big it appears to be. This city shares similarities with Budapest and Vienna, thanks to its architecture, lifestyle and the river Danube that joins them.

Cagliari, Italy

This is not the city that you are going to hear when the people are talking about Italy, but we are sure you’ll love it! Cagliari is the biggest city of Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. You can easily reach this city by plane thanks to its international airport, or by cruise, particularly in the summertime. Cagliari has a history of about 5000 years, from the Neolithic till today. In the same city, you’ll have the possibility to see prehistorical monuments, a Carthaginian era necropolis, a Roman amphitheatre, a Byzantine basilica, three Pisan towers and a great fortification system that made the town the nucleus of the Spanish Habsburg empire in the Mediterranean Sea. But the best thing to do in Cagliari, is just walk along its waterfront or along the via Roma and the large old town.

Budapest, Hungary

If you are thinking to visit eastern Europe, this is the city you are looking for. Budapest, the capital city of Hungary, with its population of about 1,750,000 inhabitants. This city is easily reachable by plane, train or bus thanks to its optimal position. Some of you might have heard that this city is the so called eastern Paris, and it surely fully deserves this association. Consider staying there at least four days, in order to see the most of it. Although the language sounds really difficult in Budapest, the prices are very inviting, you can buy food for little money and stay in a good hotel for an affordable price. What you have to do for sure is to take a cruise on the Danube, that way you will be able to see both parts of this city, the so called Buda side, and Pest side, joined together to form Budapest. The Hungarian Parliament is definitely going to take your breath away, with its height of 96 meters and its magnificent gothic architecture with 365 spires, one for every day of the year.

The next thing to visit is the beautiful Royal Palace, situated on the top of the Buda quartier. If you intend to do some shopping you should go to Váci Utca, the most famous pedestrian street in the centre. The Heroes’ Square is another must to visit in Budapest, there you can see the colossal Millennium monument. And don’t forget to visit the Fishermens’ Bastion, it looks like a magical castle and it will give you the sensation to be in a living fairy tale. In addition to that you will have a great view of the city from there. Once you get tired walking thorough the city and visiting its beauties, consider going to the famous public thermal baths, where you can relax in warm water and enjoy swimming in the great outdoor and indoor pools.

Innsbruck, Austria

Another underrated city is hidden between the Alps in Austria. Surely Vienna is more famous, and so most people have heard about Graz and Salzburg too. This city is known as the capital of the Alps, with its 130,000 inhabitants. Although very expensive to live in, you can always find some appealing and cheap offers to spend a weekend or a week. If you are ski lover or keen to sport activities, then this city is the right choice. What differentiates this city from others is its Altstadt, the heart of the city, and its two famous streets Maria-Theresien-Straße and Friedrich-Herzog-Strasse. There you can see the famous Golden Roof, framed by the beautiful view of the Nordkette, a mountain range that is part of the Alps. You can go up there with the cable car and enjoy the whole panorama of the city and the Karwendel Nature Park. If you want to move further from Innsbruck, you can visit the Längenfeld thermal baths, or even the Stubaier Glacier, where you can ski nearly the whole year.

Kotor, Montenegro

Another underrated city is to be found in the Adriatic coast. It is Kotor, a small city, mostly known for its special position and its old town. The city is situated in the Boka Kotorska, the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, it is made by a series of inlets on the Adriatic coast, which create a very suggestive landscape. One could even see a similarity with the Norwegian fjords. Kotor’s fortified old city was built between the 12th and 14th century and has been included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list. Today it is still incredibly well preserved. It looks like a smaller version of Dubrovnik, another medieval fortified city in Croatia. The number one attraction in Kotor is probably the climb up to the St. John’s fortress, a hike of 1,350 steps and 400 meters of altitude. From there you will have a beautiful view of the city and the bay, surely something that will compensate your efforts to climb up. Down in the old town, you can walk and lose yourself between narrow streets, having the feeling to be inside a labyrinth. During the summertime carnivals and festivals are organized every year, like the Bokeljska Noć, a special night where small boats in the guise of carnival floats participate to a parade and the winner is celebrated with a very long fireworks show. For this reason, we suggest you to visit Kotor during the summer, but also because you will have the possibility to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Montenegro, like those that you can find in the Luštica peninsula, just a few kilometres away from the city.

Quebec City, Canada

Let’s leave Europe and change direction to America. Another city that deserves attention is the capital city of Quebec in Canada. Did you know that it is the oldest town of North America? In fact, Québec is the oldest existing European settlement in Canada. It is a town with approximately 512,000 inhabitants and the spoken official language there is French. In addition to that, its historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The most famous building in Quebec City is undoubtedly the Chateau Frontenac, a hotel with a fairy-tale architecture that stands on the Terrasse Dufferin, a pedestrian boulevard that rises practically on the city walls and offers beautiful views of the San Lorenzo river below. If you are visiting this city, then Montmorency Falls are a must to see! This falls, situated at about 12 km from Quebec City, will surely impress you. With their 84 m jump, they are one and a half times taller than the Niagara Falls. Another great thing to do while in Québec is visiting the Aquarium du Québec, especially if you are travelling with kids, but if not, the adults hardly resist visiting it too.

Melbourne, Australia

Changing the route to another continent, you can give thought about visiting Melbourne, the second biggest city in Australia after Sidney. It is a very big city with its 4,725,000 inhabitants and also very modern city. Modernity and nature are combined together and, by walking between the high skyscrapers, you can always find some green neat park to sit and relax or walk by the sea. Known for its high standard and great organization, it is considered to be world’s most liveable city in 2017. Not only once, but for the 7th year in a row! We suggest you to visit the famous Federation Square and hop on the City Circle Tram. It is a free tram that will allow you to see the most of the city centre. If you are tired of the city you can also visit the Royal Botanic Gardens, a green paradise in the middle of the city, with more than 50,000 plants and 12,000 different species. If you want to see this beautiful modern city from above, you can reach the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower, a 280 meters high skyscraper. We suggest you to visit it during the night: the view of the city dotted with lights is particularly impressive.
