Wikipedia is so very important for our future.

Looking through the databases IBM used in its project debater, I am more than struck by how essential Wikipedia has become for understanding human knowledge. IBM’s project does a lot of fancy stuff, but having all knowledge organized so factually in Wiki is a fabulous step up in automating its understanding. This is crowdsourcing at its finest.

Wiki urges people to become proficient social scientists with its emphasis on NPOV (Non - Personal Point of View) to reduce blatantly opinionated materials. Of course, my POV is that the only way to really make knowledge objective is to include ALL points of view with a kind of weighting that makes crackpot posts like “The world is flat” or any of Trump’s blatherings rare.

Wiki helps ensure some objectivity by demanding sources for opinionated material; but that is more and more easy to come by, since newspapers are becoming more opinionated and even report Trump’s blatherings.

For automating knowledge, it is so very easy to scrape up Wiki’s articles in hierarchical topics. Then further crowdsourcing can annotate themes and supporting or contradicting evidence. Voila, you have an argument.

Wiki constantly surprises me at the depth and detail of knowledge it achieves while maintaining an air of superficiality and openness. English Wiki is so complete now that topics are becoming ever more refined and complex. Amassing 10k technical terms is so very easy in Wiki; yet, average people use only about 5k words in everyday speech. Organizing those into a semantic space, akin to Wordnet, is then an easy matter; and so simply you have commonsense knowledge about vast amounts of information.

What an amazing bootstrap to automated inference; yet, it has only been about 20 years in the making. Google already bootstrapped it into one of the largest company’s on earth. Now IBM is doing it again. I hope they both and all the other tech monopsists recognize their debt and support this fabulous resource accordingly.
