Turning Disaster Into Dollars

A lot of the conversations I have in this business revolve around claims. Discussions of loss ratios, catastrophic claims, and simple fires always seem to revolve around what it’s doing to our…

So can I make a BMAT App Just like that?

Well the short answer is no. But of course I am not going to do it just like that, because there is whole phase of planning what you are going to do, before you get anywhere near code.

For most people the planning phase really highlights how much work this is going to be, and thaaaats when they stop. But I’m so annoyed and I’m so frustrated. It’s not just this, it’s the culmination of everything that brought me to this moment in time.

It’s the day my tutor at school wrote “Jennifer is not very bright and is unlikely to amount to anything.”. Sometimes I think I would love to wave the scientific Journal papers I am an author on at that lady. But actually I wouldn’t, its just sad that she couldn’t see beyond the everyday, that should couldn’t see a student with masses of potential.

It’s the day I recieved my GCSE exam results and having just one good grade, a B in English – which I was told would have been an A, if I had corrected my spelling and punctuation. It’s not being able to go to college. Years of struggling through university with no help. It’s never having anyone who could see my potential.

So, you could say I have the bit between my teeth. I started my planning document, outlining what I am going to do, what I want to build. I read books, listen to audio books and I am ob-sessed. On the way to work, when I get home, falling asleep – I am learning and trying…. Sometimes failing a bit before i get it right.

I loved “Anything you want” by Derek Sivers. I loved the chilled vibe of his business and felt super sad to hear how his business ended. But if you E-mail him, he reads every E-mail, which is super cool. So I E-mailed him, twice. He replied both times.

This guy is so friendly and kind and he encouraged me and sent me some resources and a link to a course that would teach me the coding skills I needed.

One of the several things that stuck in my mind from his book, was, it’s not the idea that matters, it is the work and effort you put into it. So I put in a lot of work and effort. It’s a steep learning curve and sometimes I plan something and re-plan it. But things change quickly. Yesterday’s good idea, has been taken over by todays revelation and tomorrow I may want to completely quit, when something goes wrong.

I began with the idea of an App for the BMAT. Then I was exploring ways to make it a useful tool for dyslexic people. Not only because I am dyslexic, but because only 1% of doctors are dyslexic and yet, about 20% of the population are dyslexic. Dyslexia is more than a difficulty reading and writing, its a difference in information processing. One of the results is dyslexics have particular strengths, empathy being one of these. It’s also an essential train in a doctor.

Then I added another medical admissions exam, the UCAT. Personally I found the UCAT much easier than the BMAT. Some days I felt the BMAT was just written to specifically confuse me. It wasn’t that I couldn’t do to the work, but it took me longer and word problems in maths always confuse me.

I find the UCAT simple to teach, so I added this. I quite enjoyed going over the questions and pulling them apart, find ways to explain what the question needed from you and I am immersed in my laptop, writing away, planning….

It just keeps getting bigger and bigger….
